"Quand l'histoire du lieu croise l'histoire personnelle"
« When the story of the space crosses personal story. »
Autour d’un premier exercice narratif, cette maison isolé était pour nous l’occasion d’un témoignage incarnant la mémoire de ce lieu. Un récit qui est entré en résonance avec la description, faites lors de notre rencontre avec les représentants du Conservatoire du Littoral, autour d’un endroit fantasmé, privé, et qui fait parler les locaux.
L’ouverture au public de cette parcelle préservée est l’occasion, pour les locaux, de mettre une image sur ce qu’ils avaient fantasmé. L’enjeu est alors de transmettre et de partager l’histoire méconnu de cet endroit mystifié. Pour nous, le relais et le silo sont les deux premiers témoignages de l’histoire de l’étang de Saint Jean. Par ailleurs, la position excentrée des bâtiments, par rapport à l’ensemble de la parcelle, permet de développer un espace animé, en retrait de l'étang, permettant de veiller à la tranquillité de celui-ci qui se situe de l’autre coté de l’ancien relais. Nous souhaitons donc créer un espace d’échange où chacun pourrait apporter sa contribution, son témoignage, afin de reconstituer l’histoire des habitants du village et des environs avec ce lieu mystifié. Pour ce faire, nous avons développé notre programme autour de trois axes :
- La collecte d’informations, de témoignages, d’objets personnels (photographies...) ou conventionnels.
- L’exposition et la communication de ces éléments de souvenirs.
- La transmission et l’échange de ces traces du passé autour de rencontres pour confronter les témoignages, mais aussi des rencontres intergénérationnelles pour enseigner au plus jeunes.
Les acteurs du projets seront principalement les habitants des environs de l’étang de St Jean afin de tendre vers un « chantier participatif » de la mémoire. Nous souhaitons également proposer l’appui de professionnels afin de participer aux travaux de recherches d’archives et par exemple l’aide d’un écrivain public, qui pourrait être chargé d’aider à la retranscription des souvenirs des habitants.
Comment concilier les histoires fantasmées, les témoignages passés et les échanges actuels autour de ce lieu ?
C'est à travers un espace d'exposition de tous ces témoignages que l'expérience se concrétise. Cet espace profiterai d’un large volume, engendré par la dépose du plancher, qui donnerait à voir l’architecture du bâtiment: un témoignage lui aussi. Ce lieu d’échanges au temps présent permet la cohabitation et la confrontation avec les autres temps de témoignages. Ainsi il n’y aurait pas de frontière entre ces différents témoignages fantasmés, passé et présent qui reconstituent l’ensemble de l’histoire. Il s’agit du lieu idéal pour incarner le lien entre les générations et permettre la transmission d’une histoire passée et en cours d’écriture.
Before going to Brittany, we were asked to work in pairs and to write a short text about an isolated cottage in a marsh. This narrative was a strange way to start a project, but Ophelie and I decided to play along and write a detective fiction story. We imagined a local legend and many facts about the little house. The representatives presented a fantasy of private places which peek inhabitants’ interest. The aim of our project is to pass down and to share the unknown story of this mystified place. At the entrance of the parcel of land which was bought by the Conservatoire, there is the main building structure and the ruin of an old grain silo. We believe that these two buildings are testimony of the history of Saint Jean. There is also a pond placed behind the house which creates a lively composition. We paid attention to the peacefulness of the pond where birds and many animals are living. Inside the cottage, we want to develop a space for people to take part in describing their experiences in order to rebuild a the history of the site.We have developed a program around three axes :
- Collecting information, testimonies, personal objects (photographs), or conventional objects archives)
- The exhibition and communication of these memories (different collected items)
-The transmission of all these memories shared through encounters and debates, between peers as well as intergenerational.
The main participants of the project will be local people and families in order to create 'a project of memory through community.' We intend to use the support of professionals for archival research. We are not sure how we can reconcile imagined stories, relics of the past and current trade around the Lake of St Jean. This space will take advantage of a large volume, caused by the removal of the floor, which will allow visitors to see the architecture of the building, a dazzling testimony to the past. The aim of this place is to combine the present and the past, and to have a confrontation between the two views. Therefore, there will be no boundary between these different elements (fantasy, past and present) because they tell the whole story. We imagine that each element have its own exhibition device according to its degree of truth :
- A non-linear media or sound transmissions for imagined stories.
- A moving exhibition device to share oral evidences. (for example, projections which highlight the subjectivity of these evidences.)
- Window displays to show written evidences.
From a landscape point of view, we propose a new circulation to the house so that visitors see the grain silo and the house first.They will be the first testimonies revealed to visitors. Also, if we restore the grain silo, it will become a place for contemplation.
Finally, the Lake of St Jean is an ideal place to embody the link between generations and to begin connecting the story of the site’s past with the story in progress.
